When considering your Glasgow
Bathroom & Kitchen Design options if you live in the area there may be
some interesting facts worth considering in this article especially if your new
bathroom project happens to be in a tenement building. Tenements are indeed
beautiful old properties however due to their original design and 130 year old
age there are certain issues that may impact your final Bathroom Design.
One very important aspect to consider is
the straightness of the walls if you are thinking about tiling. There are two
methods used by tilers. One method is to screed the wall to be tiled 100% with
tile adhesive and simply lay the tiles on top. This method is fine only if the
walls are completely straight otherwise your tiles will naturally follow the
contours of the wall itself.
If you have chosen small “Metro” tiles in
your Glasgow tenement bathroom and the walls haven’t been plastered (or plaster
boarded) straight then the finish will be uneven and not look good. Metro tiles
can only be fixed to even walls and because these tiles are so small and thin
the tiler cannot fix the tiles using the second method which is to apply dabs
of adhesive to each tile and set each one using a spirit level.
In short, it’s a far better idea to utilise
large tiles on large, uneven walls unless you are prepared to pay to have the
walls straightened beforehand. Please also take into consideration that using
plaster boards to level out your walls will decrease the dimensions of your
room by approximately 17mm per wall which may be significant since many tenements
are often only around 1200mm wide in the first place.
One other thing to think about is how to go
about installing a shower enclosure or bath and screen in such a narrow space.
Recently a new solution has been specifically developed for Glasgow bathrooms in
tenement buildings which uses a specially designed bath screen to allow the
user to shower without water escaping. This revolutionary bath screen also
conveniently folds flat to the wall when not in use.
